How do I find journals?
You will find print and electronic journals held by the Zentralbibliothek (Main Library) and the Subject Libraries in the online catalogue, indexed by journal title. If you have too many search results you can narrow them down to the publication type "journal" or "e-journal" using the filters in the left-hand column.
When searching for journals you will not be able to filter by year of publication. First, search for the journal without entering a year, then check in the full record under the tab "More title information" to see which library location has the volume you need.
With electronic journals, look for the blue button "UBLMU full text” in the online catalogue results list. As soon as you log in with your LMU user ID you will be granted access to the journal.
In the case of printed journals, you will find all the information you need to obtain the journal in the full record for your chosen title. Click on the tab "More title information" in the record. You will find the relevant holdings details in the lower half of the record display.
- Journal holdings:
The journal volumes held at that particular location are listed here in detail.
- Journal shelfmark:
The journal shelfmark (call number) will help you find the journal in the holding library.
- Location code:
The location code (library identifier) is a numerical code for the library which has the journal. You can find out which library the code refers to by looking it up in the „Library Location Codes” list under the tab "Additional services" in the online catalogue. Here you will find the name, address and opening hours of the library.
- The link "Display volumes" in the upper box shows which bound volumes are held by the Zentralbibliothek (Main Library); these can then be ordered from the closed stacks. top
If you already know that the scholarly journal you need is available in electronic form you can also search for it in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).
If you want to know which German libraries have a particular journal, you should use the Zeitschriftendatenbank (German Journals Database - ZDB).
The ZDB indexes all printed and electronic journals held by German and Austrian academic libraries. You can search by journal title or ISSN number. When you have clicked on a title you can then use the tab "Holdings" to see where the journal is available. This information is useful if you need to use the interlibrary loans service. You cannot order electronic journals from other libraries on interlibrary loan.
