The University Archive

The University Archive is an integral part of the organisational structure of the University Library of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. The University Archive's main function is the conservation and utilisation of written records, audio-visual material and special collections from a variety of sources – from the central University administration to the faculties and individual departments, from the Academic Senate to the estates of former University lecturers. For this reason the University Archive is also the focal point for research on the University's 550-year history.

The University Archive is involved in all the processing stages of the archive material: acquisition, evaluation, organisation, listing and re-packaging. In connection with the conservation of the archive material and its preparation for re-use, the archive staff are responsible for exercising the legal mandate enshrined in the Bayerisches Archivgesetz (Bavarian Archive Law) and for the provision of advisory services to the academic and administrative staff.

The increasing acquisition of digital material, the compilation of relevant publications, the management of the University collections and the active exchange of experience with appropriate professional circles complete the University Archive's remit.
