DEAL contract with Elsevier

The LMU has signed up to the nationwide DEAL agreement with the publishing house Elsevier. This agreement provides members of the LMU with electronic access to most of the Elsevier journals, together with new ways of publishing research results on open access.

The DEAL framework agreement with Elsevier runs for a period of five years (2024-2028). LMU’s participation in the agreement can be terminated annually.

Contents of the agreement

In detail, the contract with Elsevier covers the following usage rights on all researchers and students of the LMU:

Reading access

You have electronic access to the current volumes of almost all Elsevier journals (incl. Cell Press and The Lancet Journals as well as numerous journal imprints from specialist societies cooperating with Elsevier) during the contract period (2023ff.). You also have backfile access to the Elsevier journal portfolio from 1997 to 2022 for the duration of the contract.

After the end of participation in the DEAL contract with Elsevier, the journals will be available at LMU with permanent archive rights from 2023 onwards.

Subject to funding from the DFG, there will be permanent archive access to backfiles of Elsevier journals until 2022, so that there will be a seamless connection to existing LMU national licences (mostly until 2002). The gaps that arose during the years without a contract with Elsevier would therefore be closed.

Access to the journals via the EZB (Electronic Journals Library):

Some society journals are not included in the DEAL contract, see link to the title list as an Excel file below (Excel tab "excluded-ch-cptl").

Publishing

The requirements for publishing in Hybrid as well as Gold Open Access are:

  • Most of the research was carried out at the LMU.
  • The submission must be made using a valid LMU email address.
  • The Submitting Corresponding Author is an active member of the LMU.
  • The LMU is stated as the main affiliation in the article

When specifying your affiliation, please refer to the official name of the university: "Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München" (https://ror.org/05591te55) or LMU Klinikum (https://ror.org/02jet3w32) or "Klinikum der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München". Of course, you can also add institute, clinic, center, working group, etc.

For further information on the name of the university, please refer to the letter from the President of LMU:
Huber, Bernd (31. Juli 2023): Bezeichnung der LMU auf Publikationen (in German)

Hybrid Open Access

From 1.1.2024, all LMU researchers have the option, but not the obligation, to publish their research articles in Elsevier subscription journals (so-called "hybrid journals") Open Access under a Creative Commons license. Articles in most Elsevier journals are made available under the CC BY license; CC BY-NC-ND is also possible.

Hybrid articles whose acceptance date (acceptance of the publication by Elsevier for publication) is after 1.1.2024 are covered by the DEAL contract with Elsevier.

If the submitting author is a member of the LMU, the faculty or department of the submitting author contributes to the costs. The faculties and departments decide independently on the extent to which they pass on the costs directly to the submitting author.

The same as in the "Reading" part of the contract, some society journals that do not participate in the Core Hybrid program are excluded in the "Publishing" part, such as the journal Blood or Blood Advances from the American Society of Hematology.

Gold Open Access

In addition, there is the possibility to publish in the Elsevier Gold Open Access journals, including Cell Press and The Lancet.

Discounts on the publication fees will be given to articles submitted from 1.1.2024 onwards as follows:

  • 20 % discount on APC list price of all Elsevier Fully Gold Open Access journals
  • 15% discount on APC list price for Fully Gold Open Access journals from Cell Press and The Lancet.

The costs for Gold Open Access publications are not covered centrally. After publication the University Library will invoice the institutes, departments or faculties concerned.

If the funding requirements for the LMU Open Access Fund are met, the funding amount is automatically included in the invoice.

Significance of the agreement

This means that publications by members of the LMU will be available free to interested scholars worldwide. This will result in a considerable increase in the visibility of this research work, simplifying its re-use whilst continuing to respect the rights of the authors.

All articles published via the Project DEAL agreement with Elsevier will additionally be made available via the University Library's publications server and will thus remain permanently archived at the LMU
