Many publishers charge authors a fee for publishing their open access works, the so called Article Processing Charges (APC). Some publishers offer framework contracts or membership schemes to academic institutions, allowing publication at a reduced rate or free of charge. The LMU profits from the agreements listed below.

Reduced publication rates

BioMed Central offers LMU members a discount of 20% (plus 19% VAT) on the cost of publishing in the journals of the following publishers:

  • BioMed Central
  • Springer Open
  • Chemistry Central

The invoice is first settled by the University Library. After the work has been published the University Library will bill the Corresponding Author's department for the amount.

BioMed Central, Springer Open und Chemistry Central's catalogues comprise around 350 open access journals, mainly from the fields of medicine and the natural sciences.

How to submit an article

To submit an article you must first register for a free personal account at BioMed Central, Springer Open und Chemistry Central. To upload a manuscript, please do the following:

  • Log in via the University Library's E-Media Login page.
  • Select "Datenbanken (DBIS / Datenbank-Infosystem)" (Database Information System).
  • Click on BioMed Central.

In this way you will be recognised by BioMedCentral as an LMU member and will receive the associated discount. If you see „Welcome Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Muenchen” when you open BioMed Central you will know the authentication has been successful. You do not need to enter a membership number.

British Medical Journals - BMJ

As part of a consortium agreement the publisher BMJ offers LMU members a discount of 20% on the cost of publications in their genuine open access journals. In the title list these titles are tagged with lock symbol.

For 2017 BMJ offers all members of the consortium 20 vouchers for publications without APC in their hybrid Open Access journals. Vouchers are allocated on the basis first come, first serve.

Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins - LWW

The publisher WoltersKluwer offers members of the LMU a 30% discount on all LWW journals with an Open Access option, be they genuine Open Access journals or hybrid journals.

The journals catalogue of the publishers MDPI includes more than 120 open access journals from a variety of academic disciplines. LMU authors will receive a 25% discount.

When submitting your article, please tell the publishers you are a member of the LMU.

SCOAP3 is an international project providing worldwide free access to scholarly publications in the field of high-energy physics (HEP) via Gold Open Access. At a national level the project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

In some journals only a proportion of articles they contain falls under the category HEP. In such cases SCOAP3 will only bear the cost if the article has been deposited on arXiv under the main category "HEP" before submission.
