Many publishers require publication fees for Open Access publications, so-called Article Processing Charges (APC), from the authors or their institutions.
The University Library of the LMU has concluded framework contracts or memberships with some publishers, through which a publication can be published at a reduced price.
Before submitting, be critical about the trustworthiness and integrity of a journal.
LMU members will receive as a discount on all hybrid or Gold Open Access publications in the ACM journals:
- Journal articles: 1,500 USD (instead of 1,700 USD)
- Proceedings articles: 800 USD (instead of 900 USD)
Reduced publication rates
BioMed Central offers LMU members a discount of 20% (plus 19% VAT) on the cost of publishing in the journals of BioMed Central and Springer Open.
The invoice is first settled by the University Library. After the work has been published the University Library will bill the Corresponding Author's department for the amount.
BioMed Central und Springer Open's catalogues comprise around 350 open access journals, mainly from the fields of medicine and the natural sciences.
How to submit an article
To submit an article you must first register for a free personal account at BioMed Central, Springer Open und Chemistry Central. To upload a manuscript, please do the following:
- Log in via the University Library's E-Media Login page.
- Select "Datenbanken (DBIS / Datenbank-Infosystem)" (Database Information System).
- Click on BioMed Central.
In this way you will be recognised by BioMedCentral as an LMU member and will receive the associated discount. If you see „Welcome Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Muenchen” when you open BioMed Central you will know the authentication has been successful. You do not need to enter a membership number.
LMU corresponding authors will receive a discount of 20% on the cost of publications in BMJ's Gold Open Access journals. In the publisher's title list these titles are tagged with orange lock symbols.
In addition, BMJ annually provides all participating parties with 20 vouchers for hybrid Open Access publications, without calculating APCs for the publication. The voucher contingent will be provided on a first come first serve basis.

As of January 01, 2019, LMU corresponding authors can publish unlimited and free of charge in all hybrid journals published by Cambridge University Press within the framework of a DFG-funded consortium. The publication in Gold Open Access journals of the publisher is excluded.

LMU members receive a discount of 10% on the cost of publishing in journals of the Frontiers publishing house.
The University Library first settles the invoice. After the article has been published, the University Library will bill the Corresponding Author's department for the amount plus 19% VAT.
Frontiers' variety of journals offers about 60 open access journals, mainly from the fields of natural sciences, humanities, social sciences and mathematics.
LMU corresponding authors may annually publish 5 articles in the hybrid journals of IOP Publishing for free. The exemption of the article costs takes place chronologically after article acceptance. Articles in genuine Open Access journals are excluded.

The publisher Wolters Kluwer grants LMU corresponding authors a discount of 30% on the publication fees in all LWW journals with available Open Access option. In addition to genuine Open Access journals, the publisher offers a large number of hybrid journals.
The journals catalogue of the publishers MDPI includes more than 200 open access journals from a variety of academic disciplines. LMU corresponding authors will receive a 25% discount on publication fees.
Please indicate your affiliation with the LMU when submitting your article.
LMU corresponding authors will receive a discount on articles in all journals of the publishing house. The publisher's website informs about the exact conditions.
Hybrid journals (SAGE Choice program)
As of January 01, 2019, the Article Processing Charge (APC) for many hybrid journals amount to 200 GBP instead of 3,000 GBP. It is required that the Corresponding Author is affiliated with the LMU. The affiliation of the author is verified by comparing the email domain (uni-muenchen.de and lmu.de) or by indicating the Ringgold ID of the LMU (9183). The costs will be charged directly to the authors.
Gold Open Access journals
The publisher grants 20% discount on articles in Gold Open Access Journals. The discount code can be found in the "Sage Gold OA Workflow". Subsequent granting of a discount is excluded.

LMU corresponding authors will receive a 15% discount on the current publication fee for publications in the journal "Science Advances".

SCOAP3 is an international project providing worldwide free access to scholarly publications in the field of high-energy physics (HEP) via Gold Open Access. At a national level the project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
LMU authors can publish free of charge in the following journals:

In some journals only a proportion of articles they contain falls under the category HEP. In such cases SCOAP3 will only bear the cost if the article has been deposited on arXiv under the main category "HEP" before submission.

LMU corresponding authors will receive a discount of 5% on the cost of publishing in selected journals of the Taylor & Francis Group.
This agreement only affects publications in Gold Open Access Journals of Taylor & Francis and Cogent. Currently, there is no discount given for open access articles published in hybrid journals. Please find the overview of the Taylor & Francis Open Access Journals on the publisher's website.
