Installing Citavi

Basic version Citavi Free

You can download the free limited basic version of Citavi Free from the Citavi website.

Please note that Citavi Free only allows you to import up to 100 titles. Only unlocking Citavi Free via the LMU campus licence allows you to import an unlimited number of literature references.

Full version Citavi for Windows (LMU campus licence)

You can unlock the full version of Citavi in three simple steps:

  1. Download the basic version Citavi Free to your computer and install the program.
  2. To activate the full version of Citavi you need a licence key. Students and staff of the LMU should apply for for the licence key by registering on the Citavi website. Please choose the correct category („Wissenschaftler/in oder sonst. Mitarbeiter/in” or „Student/in”) and enter your LMU e-mail adress (an address ending in lmu.de or uni-muenchen.de, for example name@bwl.uni-muenchen.de). You will receive an e-mail to which you need to reply to confirm your e-mail adress.
  3. Once your e-mail adress has been confirmed, you can create your Citavi account. You will need to choose a password for your account. Subsequently, please copy the licence data displayed in your account, start your version of Citavi Free and enter your licence data (under "Lizenzdaten eingeben"). This unlocks your full version of Citavi.

You can download regular updates for Citavi. The program will notify you automatically of new updates as soon as they become available.

How to use with Citavi 6

If you are already using the full version of Citavi 6, just log in to Citavi Web using your existing Citavi account. Any Local Projects you have already created must first be converted into Cloud Projects. You can continue to use the Citavi 6 Word Add-In when citing in Word.

How to use without Citavi 6

If you are not already using Citavi 6, go to the Citavi website to create a Citavi account as a member of the LMU. You are now ready to start using Citavi Web.

If you want to use the citation function within Word, you will need the Citavi Assistant. You will find more information on the Citavi Assistant in the Citavi Web manual and in a special screencast:

Please note: You cannot use the Citavi Assistant to edit existing citation styles or add new ones. This also applies to the LMU citation styles available from our download centre.

Parallel installation of both Citavi and EndNote on a single computer

You can also install both Citavi and EndNote on your computer at the same time provided you are using the operating system Windows.

Cloud projects

Apart from local projects, Citavi 6 now also supports cloud projects. Cloud projects allow you to work on your project from any computer. Please note that each cloud project and its attachments should not be larger than 5 GB.
