Library card

From mid-February onwards the LMU will roll out the LMUcard, which will be successively issued to all students and doctoral candidates currently enrolled at the LMU. Employees of the LMU are advised to apply for an LMUcard with integrated library function.

If you have not (yet) received your LMUcard you can ask for a library card to be issued to you.

LMU students

For students, the LMUcard is the only ID required for using the library. Should you nevertheless still use the old white library card, please note that it will expire on 30 September 2019. Please request your LMUcard online soon.

Your library card will be sent to you automatically via the University New Appointments Service.

Already in office:
1. Certificate of appointment or employee ID
2. Personal identity card

LMU staff (if without LMUcard)

1. Employment contract (copy) or employee ID with valid stamp for the current year
2. Personal identity card, or passport with certificate of residency, or passport with residency permit

Please note: Student or graduate assistants receive a library card according to their status as students or researchers.

If you have a fixed-term employment contract your library card will be valid until the end of your contract. If your fixed-term employment contract is extended or if you are awarded a permanent contract the validity of your library card can also be extended.

Completed application with departmental stamp and signature. The appropriate form can be obtained at the UB.info desk in the Zentralbibliothek (Main Library).

Postgraduates enrolled at the LMU

For postgraduates enrolled at the LMU, the LMUcard is the only ID required for using the library. The University Library does not issue library cards to postgraduates enrolled at the LMU.

Postgraduates preparing their doctoral thesis but no longer enrolled at the LMU

Where can you get your library card?What documents will you need?

1. Personal identity card, or passport with certificate of residency, or passport with residency permit
2. Confirmation by the Examination Office (Prüfungsamt) or written confirmation from your academic tutor
This must include the following:
a. Letter head and stamp of the department
b. Your academic tutor's signature
c. The expected completion date of your promotion

Students of the TU Munich and the Hochschule für Politik (HfP)

1. Student identity card
2. Personal identity card, or passport with certificate of residency, or passport with residency permit

Your library card is valid to the end of the current term.
To renew your card please show your student ID for the next term at the Information Desk. You can also send a scan as an e-mail attachment
to information@ub.uni-muenchen.de

Staff of the TU Munich and the HfP

Where can you get your library card?What documents will you need?

If you have a fixed-term employment contract your library card will be valid until the end of your contract.
If your fixed-term employment contract is extended or its status converted to permanent, the validity of your library card can also be extended.

International academic staff guests

Users not resident in Germany will be issued with a library card valid for the reading room only.

Secondary and high school students (over 16 years old)

1. Pupil ID or written confirmation from your school
2. Personal identity card, or passport with certificate of residency, or passport with residency permit

Pupils under 18 will need in addition:
1. Completed application for the registration of a new user under 18 years (in German, PDF document, 94 kB)
2. Copy of the personal identity card of a parent or guardian

Private individuals, trainee teachers, students of other universities

Bavarian State Library

Personal identity card, or passport with certificate of residency, or passport with residency permit

Your Bavarian State Library card is also valid for the LMU University Library.
However you will not be able to use the Textbook Collection or access the electronic media.
